One of the two down stairs on the map is actually a mimic guarding a dart trap. The altar is to Moloch, and is surrounded by fire traps and guarded by two mariliths, three manes, a hezrou, two vrocks, a barbed devil, a succubus, and a priest of Moloch. Getting into the skull, however, is the biggest challenge. The entire level has nondiggable walls. The only way in is via the water-- By diving under the surface of the (shark- and eel-infested) water in the lower left corner of the map, you will find an underwater cave leading beneath the stone area to the pool in front of Skull Rock. This cave is only accessible via swimming, so you should have some way of protecting your gear from rusting. You will also of course need to be capable of surviving underwater-- for this, you can make your way through the maze in the right half of the map, which will allow you access to the side room in Skull Rock. Within, a three-headed monkey guards a guaranteed amulet of magical breathing that will allow you to traverse the seacave. Once you've entered Skull Rock, the filler levels are ordinary cave levels. The goal level for the quest is Kubla Khan's pleasure dome: }}}}}.............#........#.....................-------------------- }}}}}....----------.....----------........#.........#...............-------- }}}}}....|...|....|-----|....|...|.#..........................#............. }}}}}}...|--+-+-------------+-+--|....##....#...##........##....#...##....<. }}}}}}...|.|...---.......---...|.|....##........##........##........##...... }}}}}}}}}|.+.-S-...-----...-S-.+.|}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}}}}|.|--...---------...--|.|}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}}}}---|..---#{#{#{#---..|---}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}}}}}}||.--#{.......{#--.|-------..--------..--------..--------..------ }}}}}}}}}}}||.+......\......+.++............................................ }}}}}}}}}}}||.--#{.......{#--.|-------..--------..--------..--------..------ }}}}}}}}}---|..---#{#{#{#---..|---}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}}}}|.|--...---------...--|.|}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}}}}|.+.-S-...-----...-S-.+.|}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}}}}##}}}}}} }}}}}}...|.|...---.......---...|.|....##........##........##........##...... }}}}}}...|--+-+-------------+-+--|....##........##........##.#......##...... }}}}}....|...|....|-----|....|...|.......#......#..............#............ }}}}}....----------...#.----------.........#........------------------------ }}}}}...........#.....................----------------- }}}}}...................#...----------- }}}}}..........-------------- Captain Greyjoy sits on the throne, with the White Plume. The tiny rooms throughout the palace itself contain an array of succubi, incubi, and a few nymphs. Two of the rooms contain chests with random loot. Three gremlins are present, and will likely end up in the river or ocean and generate many more. The dome is guarded by gargoyles, vortices and yellow and black lights. =================================== 3.0 Treasures and Resources =================================== In fdshack there are new items to be had, and also new ways to use many items that already exist. Here's a list of what's new! 3.1 - ARMOR: [ tuxedos are a type of armor suit made of cloth. They provide MC 2 and no AC bonus, and are special mainly in that they can be enchanted to +9 without evaporating. [ diving suits provide magical breathing and complete protection from water damage via immersion, allowing you to walk around underwater without ruining your scrolls. [ clown shoes are a type of boot, "floppy shoes" when unidentified. They block stealth when worn. [ tricorner hats are a type of headgear. They are made of cloth and count as soft helmets. Pirates start with one. 3.2 - COMESTIBLES: % limes are a type of citrus fruit. They grant 70 nutrition. 3.3 - POTIONS: + Dipping a scroll or spellbook in a potion of blindness will turn it completely black (and thus unreadable). + Dipping a scroll or spellbook blackened in this way into a potion of enlightenment will cause raised dots to "develop" on the pages, turning into a braille scroll or spellbook. These can be read blind (but not while unblinded) and function exactly as they ordinarily would. This allows a pure-zen character to read spellbooks (such as the book of the dead) without taking off his or her blindfold, and thus allows the completion of the game totally blind. 3.4 - SCROLLS: + Any scroll or spellbook can be transformed into a braille version of itself. See Potions (2.2) for more info. If it is useful, a wish can also specify the braille or blackened properties for a scroll or spellbook. ? Summon Shop scrolls have a base price of 300 gold and are rarer than any other scroll. Reading a scroll of summon shop will have different effects depending on your location, the BUC-status of the scroll, and whether or not you are confused. anywhere not inside a room No effect. "You have a feeling of confinement for a moment, then it passes." inside a room that's already occupied No effect. "The air seems to shimmer for a moment, like a mirage." "The air feels warm around you for a moment." (blind) uncursed Summon a random shop as described below. If successful, you identify the scroll. blessed As uncursed, except that you get to choose what type of shop to create. "What kind of shop do you want?" You always identify the scroll. cursed You level-teleport to a dungeon level with a shop in it, always arriving roughly in the middle of the shop. uncursed and confused Summon a random temple in the current room. blessed and confused Summon an aligned temple in the current room. cursed and confused Summon a cross-aligned temple in the current room. Regardless of what you are summoning and where, there is a progressive chance of failure on each subsequent summon shop scroll. You get your shop if a 7/(N+4) chance succeeds, where N is the number of successfully summoned shops. Thus your first three summons are guaranteed, but you'll need to find a lot of scrolls if you want to fill every room in the dungeon. Note that although a summoned shop may have multiple doors, and the shopkeeper can only cover one of them at a time, they are still just as militant as ever about theft, and have been beefed up a little bit to compensate for the difference. (See the section on monsters for more info.) 3.5 - TOOLS: ) crystal balls weigh slightly less than stock nethack (100 units, i.e. 2/3 the normal weight). That's probably not enough to make carrying them around worthwhile, but it reduces the pressure on the Valkyrie and Archaeologist to dump or stow their quest artifacts rather than enjoy the benefits throughout the endgame. =================================== 4.0 Artifacts =================================== I suppose this is Mostly a subset of "new objects," but I figured that artifacts are special enough to warrant their own section. Plus, I'll record any changes to existing artifacts here of course. 4.1 % - The Pie of Omens ----------------------------- The Pie of Omens, an artifact cream pie, has all of the normal properties of cream pies; it can be eaten for 100 nutrition, or thrown in the face of an enemy to blind them, or applied to blind oneself. The Pie of Omens, however, has several unique abilities. Firstly, if applied to blind yourself or thrown, it is not used up in the process. You can keep blinding yourself or others with the Pie of Omens forever. Secondly, when thrown it will magically return to your hand. It may hit you on the way back if you are impaired, just like Mjollnir. Thirdly, the Pie of Omens has a special magic on it which forces its victims to have a sense of humor. As a result, blinding a peaceful creature with it will not anger them. Eating the Pie of Omens is not recommended. This may sound underwhelming, but the Pie of Omens has another side benefit-- it counts as "negative-one artifacts" for the purposes of wishing, so it effectively allows you to safely wish for one more artifact than you ordinarily could. Owning the Pie also very slightly improves your chances of getting the number, enchantment or charges you ask for with a wish. These wishing- related powers are related only to the artifact's presence in your game and your ownership of it-- if you have killed Pee Wee (see the Dungeon section on Clown Ruler Temple) and claimed it, you can even leave it in your stash or on the floor and still gain these benefits. The Pie is only available from Clown Ruler Temple and cannot be created or wished for. 4.2 ( - Cleaver -------------------------------- As one might expect from the name, Cleaver now uses a cleave attack when wielded, as though the user were a pirate with 25 dexterity. See section 2.1, The Pirate above for more info on cleaving. It is otherwise unchanged from the stock Nethack artifact, but this change alone may make it much more attractive as an endgame weapon for some characters. 4.3 [ - The White Plume -------------------------------- The White Plume is the Pirate quest artifact. It is a tricorner hat and is chaotic for wishing purposes. It invokes for magic mapping. Wearing it has the effect of a "Hat of Charisma", setting your charisma to 25 when worn, much like Gauntlets of Power or Dexterity. This has all of the standard effects, plus a few bonuses for Pirates. As a Pirate, wearing the White Plume gives your insults superhuman efficacy. Wearing the Plume unlocks two additional insult effects: A chance to blind your foe, and a chance to cause them to explode into flame, dealing fire damage to not only them but everything adjacent to them as well (including yourself, usually.) In addition, your (successful) insults can now have any or all of the effects-- you're no longer restricted to just one. As a special bonus, wearing the White Plume lets you #chat underwater, so you can curse the eel that's trying to drown you. =================================== 5.0 New Monsters =================================== fdshack features the following new types of creature to fight: @ clowns @ dire clowns Clowns and Dire Clowns are terrible creatures that wield cream pies and hit comparatively hard for their levels, but have poor armor in turn. Dire clowns are also occasionally generated with attack items, so be careful when you first start seeing them. They occasionally wear Hawaiian shirts, so they are a good source of these. B parrot (tiny parrot, small parrot, large parrot) parrots are a new type of domestic animal. They like fruit and love booze, but will eat meat if hungry enough. When tamed, they are fully capable of learning insults from a Pirate. A tame parrot's insults will generally be less effective than your own-- they start at 50% effectiveness, and as you teach them new insults (by example) they will improve, eventually reaching 100% of your effectiveness. large parrots will wear hats if these are available, swapping them out for better hats as they become available. Tricorner hats are the parrot fashion of choice, however, and a parrot will preferentially wear them over better hats. Additionally, there are some changes to existing monsters. @ shopkeepers Shopkeepers may now be generated with wands of sleep or, perhaps most terrifyingly, cloaks of magic resistance. This should make stealing from them a little more of a gamble for low and mid-level players, particularly if you're hoping to shoot them with that wand of death from their shelf in order to steal it. On the other hand, it also makes them a good source of magic resistance. =================================== 6.0 Dungeon Modifications =================================== In the near future, fdshack will sport a much improved (in my opinion) dungeon for you to explore. For now, there is just one new attraction: 6.1 Clown Ruler Temple -------------------------- Clown Ruler Temple is a "floating branch" like Fort Ludios, meaning it is not guaranteed to appear in every game you play. Assuming you are an experienced nethack player, you are likely familiar with the tiny "closets" that are generated throughout the Dungeons of Doom. Some of these are empty; some contain teleporters leading to vaults of gold, some are level teleport traps or trapdoors. In fdshack, there is a new type of "closet", in which a clown or dire clown hides. On dungeon levels below 5 (and above the Castle) there is approximately a 5% chance of a clown closet containing a portal to Clown Ruler Temple. Upon arriving in Clown Ruler Temple, you will find yourself locked in a mirror of the closet you came in through. Outside the closet is a small random forest with some random creatures in it. You may have to chop down trees to get to the main clearing where the temple stands. #############--------------------........###.........#.. ########------................------.*#.............#..# ######---..........................-------............## ####---..................................------......##. ##---........--------+---------+----..........---.....#. -----+-....---*S..........|........-------......---..... |.....|..------|..barrack.|........|.....---.....|}..#.. |.....|..|.....-+---------|........|.{.....---...|}..... |.....#..|................|+-####---.........-##--}..... |.*_..#..+..*\..throne....|^########.............|}..... |.....#..|................|+-####---.........-##--}..... |.....|..|.....-+---------|........|.{.....---...|}..##. |.....|..------|..barrack.|........|.....---.....|}..#.# -----+-....---*S..........|........-------.....----..... ##---........--------+---------+----.........---....#..# ##..---.................................------#.....}}}# #.....-S-..........................------.........#}}}}. ##*.{...------................------............##}}}}}} ##.....######------------------..............###.#.}}}}. As the Oracle will tell you, in order to open the drawbridge you must prove your worth to the Temple's inhabitants. You can do this by smashing a cream pie in your face, demonstrating your clownlike tendencies. It shouldn't be hard to get your hands on one, since there was at least one clown standing between you and the portal that took you to Clown Ruler Temple. You can also simply smash the drawbridge with any of the usual methods and then jump, fly, swim or waterwalk in. The entry areas feature iron bars through which clowns will fling pies at you (and other monsters will no doubt use their own ranged attacks). The barracks are empty, but will likely fill with temple inhabitants by the time you get there. The throne room is full of clowns, who are attending their leader, Pee Wee Herman, who sits on the throne. The trap in front of the door to the throne room is a squeaky board; several more are scattered randomly about the map. There are three treasure chests on the level, each stashed in one of the several locations marked with '*'s on the map above: + either of the two side closets off the barracks + next to the throne + in the clown college + by the fountain in the hidden courtyard (the lower-left corner) + behind a tree, outside the temple in the upper right. One of the treasures is an icebox containing a collection of booze and frozen food. The second is a collection of books and scrolls, including a guaranteed spellbook of identify. The third treasure consists of magical clown shoes, food, and sometimes a random wand, potion and/or amulet. Pee Wee Herman carries the Pie of Omens (See Artifacts above for details of the Pie's powers). The wishing-related benefits of the Pie will not apply to you until you have killed Pee Wee, so if you get your hands on the Pie by some sneakier method you will still have to kill Pee Wee to get its benefits. Defeating him will also earn you an achievement for the stats page. In the back of Clown Ruler Temple is the Clown College; the altar is always chaotic, and is attended by three Dire Clowns named Larry, Curly, and Moe.
